北京医院始建于1905年，起初的名称叫德国医院，二战胜利后改称市立北平医院。1949年4月，中央军委卫生部带领延安中央医院和白求恩国际和平医院的医务人员接管了当时的“市立北平医院”，并随着北京地名的变更改名为“北京医院”。岁月冲刷了过去的印记，却留存下北京医院的风格——含蓄内敛、朴实无华。

北京医院位于北京市中心，占地面积 55800多平方米，建筑面积 227788平方米，现有床位1247张，职工 2604人，其中医生670人，护士1038人，医技人员 257人，药师97人。具有正副主任医师、正副教授、研究员及相应职称的高级技术人员462人；博士、硕士766人。医院设有临床和医技科室 38个，承担着中央领导干部的医疗保健任务及 15000余名司局级以上干部医疗保健任务和80余万参保人员的医疗保险工作。同时，还接待大量京外各地转诊的疑难危重病人。北京医院有承担多次国家大型活动、重要会议的医疗保健工作的经验和能力，曾出色地完成了多次外国元首的医疗保健任务。

2015年3月，原国家卫生计生委正式批复同意在北京医院设置国家老年医学中心。国家老年医学中心的成立，将使老年医学领域的科学研究、临床医疗、康复护理与公共卫生政策、健康管理融为一体。国家老年医学中心的建设发展坚持高点定位和国际视野，积极开展我国老年相关疾病疑难危重症的诊断与治疗，示范、推广适宜有效的高水平诊疗技术；开展高层次老年医学人才教学培养，培养临床技术骨干和学科带头人；承担全国老年医学临床转化研究，针对老年健康有重大影响的疾病组织开展相关科学研究，及时将国内外临床科研成果转化为临床应用并进行有效推广等。国家老年医学中心未来将是融医疗、护理、科研、教学、预防、管理及政策制定的“七位一体”功能的重大疾病防治和健康管理的核心机构。

2016年7月，北京医院获批成为国家老年疾病临床医学研究中心，这是继2015年国家老年医学中心成功落户北京医院之后的又一支临床研究领域的国家队。

国家老年中心和国家老年疾病临床医学研究中心都将以北京医院为依托，在国家卫生健康委员会和科技部的指导下，以老年医学为研究特色，以实现健康老龄化和老年人群的健康需求为导向，有针对性地解决老年疾病与功能维护问题，统筹我国老年学科的临床资源，与老年病学领域具有显著学术和技术优势的大型医院形成广泛合作，共同推进我国老龄健康建设工程，为积极应对人口老龄化提供有益支撑。

此外，我院还承担了多项临床教学工作。自2009年起，承担北京大学医学部临床医学八年制的全程临床教学工作，并于2015年正式成为北京协和医学院教学医院。截至2014年，我院共17个专业基地通过住院医师规范化培训基地评审，成为全国全科医师规范化培养基地项目建设单位。2011年投入使用的临床技能模拟培训中心，在教学工作中发挥了重要作用。
