天津医科大学第二医院始建于1972年，在原河北省医院院址上建立。建院之初，医院汇聚了一大批国内外专家，如内科学专家石毓澍、甘幼强，外科学专家马腾骧、李庆瑞，耳鼻喉科学专家阎承先等，为医院发展奠定了坚实的基础。经过40多年的发展，天津医科大学第二医院已发展成为集医疗、教学、科研、预防为一体的三级甲等综合性大学医院。

医院占地面积8.6万平方米，建筑面积13.2万平方米，开放床位1360张，于1993年通过三级甲等医院评审，是天津市区域医疗中心。医院科室设置齐全，设有临床科室35个、医技科室12个。拥有博士学位点9个、硕士学位点24个。

经过多年的努力，医院在学科发展中形成了自身的诊疗特色，拥有尿石症治疗中心、疼痛治疗中心、伽玛刀治疗中心及华北地区规模较大的肾脏病血液透析科。医院拥有设备9996台（套），其中百万元以上设备66台（套），价值约2.29亿元。年门诊量167余万人次，出院病人4.06万人次。
