戴月轩毛笔的制作技艺采用的方法是披柱法。披柱法就是先作成毛笔头中心的“笔柱”也称“笔胎”，然而再笔柱上覆上一层薄薄的披毛，把笔柱紧紧抱住，这种做法即为披柱法。

虽然现在制笔业广泛使用披柱法，但技艺间还是有差异的。戴月轩湖笔继承了湖笔的品质特征，同时也博采众长，完善笔的品种类型。如：湖笔突出特色是羊毫笔其毫尖端有一段整齐而透明的锋颖，细长挺直蘸墨后笔锋仍保持尖锥形，并可久写不敷，笔工们称“锋颖”为“黑子”。这一特色是湖笔制作过程中的一道工序“配锋”而形成的，配锋是湖笔独有的技艺，戴月轩毛笔纯羊毫的制作过程中保持配锋独到的技艺。在制作狼毫笔时，又吸纳了北派刚力充足的制作优点，从而保持戴月轩三大类笔各扬其长、应有尽有。特色化并多样化，从而也发展了戴月轩毛笔的制作技艺。
