天津体育学院成立于1958年8月。建校初期，学校汇集了一批优秀教练员和运动员，具有较高的竞技运动水平。

学校占地534亩（356018平方米），建有综合训练馆、田径馆、篮球馆、排球馆、游泳馆、舞蹈馆等教学训练馆12座，国际标准的塑胶田径场、足球场和灯光棒球场等室外训练场地20余块，教学科研仪器设备总值1亿2千余万元，学校图书馆总面积7800平方米，馆藏文献量（含电子文献）达192万余册。

学校现有16个本科专业，涉及教育学、管理学、文学、艺术学、理学、医学6个学科门类。

学校在编教职工477人，专任教师301人，其中教授55人，副教授109人，具有博士学位的教师81人，具有硕士学位的教师166人。

学校重视高水平竞技体育人才的培养，积极探索新形势下体教结合、培养高水平竞技人才的新模式和新途径。棒球、软式网球、中国式摔跤、藤球等运动项目是学院的传统优势项目，我校教师和学生作为教练员和运动员多次在世界杯、亚运会、全国锦标赛等大赛中取得优异成绩，在国内外均有较大影响。2009年开始，学校受天津市体育局委托，承担了天津市羽毛球队、赛艇队、橄榄球队的组建与训练任务，将代表天津市参加2017年全国运动会比赛。

学校不断加强对外合作与交流，与国外多所大学建立了校际友好关系。

2013年3月，学校位于静海区团泊新城西区健康产业园的新校区建设奠基开工。新校区占地面积1115.7亩，规划建设各类校舍建筑总面积46.31万平方米，预计总投资47亿元，2016年实现整体搬迁，将从根本上扩展学校的办学空间、改善办学条件、增强办学实力。

经过50多年的发展，学校逐步形成了以体育学科为主、相关学科协调发展的办学特色与优势，构建了从本科教育到硕士、博士研究生教育的完整办学体系，以及涵盖普通高等教育、成人教育和留学生教育的开放式办学格局，成为一所在国内外有较大影响的现代体育高等学府。
