首都医科大学宣武医院创建于1958年，是一所以神经科学和老年医学为重点，以治疗心脑血管疾患为主要特色，承担着医疗、教育、科研、预防、保健和康复任务的大型三级甲等综合医院。

医院在以医院综合实力为主体，神经科学和老年医学为特色的“一体两翼”发展格局下，各学科稳步发展。神经科学各分支学科不断发展壮大。

设立在本院的北京市老年病医疗研究中心和北京市老年保健及疾病防治中心，担负着北京市老年健康服务体系的龙头和执行管理职能使命。已构建成为集管理、服务、医疗、科研、教育等功能为一体的、在国内具特色的老年医学体系，成为对内起示范作用、对外是交流窗口的老年医学研究的重要基地和特色品牌。围绕老年重大慢性疾病防控、老年共病防治及老年综合健康评估等关键问题，整合全国资源，开展基础及临床应用研究，促进生物医药前沿技术向临床防治的转化和推广，提升我国老年人的总体健康水平。

医院占地面积7.6万平方米，总建筑面积9.9万平方米，正在扩建面积8万平方米，开放床位1159张，扩建后将增加480张，年门急诊量达290余万人次，年出院病人5万余人次。

医院拥有高级专业技术人员460余名，包括中科院院士、长江学者和享有政府特贴的突出贡献专家。设有31个中西医临床科室、11个医技科室。拥有脑磁图、西门子双源CT(Force)、西门子双源CT(Flash)、GE宝石能谱CT、PET-CT、SPECT-CT、3.0 T磁共振成像系统、移动式术中放疗系统、双C臂数字减影血管造影机等精密诊疗与科研设备，以及设施完善的数字手术室和杂交手术室。

 “十二五”期间，共获得科研立项467项，其中省部级课题116项，局级课题181项。获批经费32724.11万元。全院共发表国内统计源文章3902篇，SCI文章788篇，临床科研的投入和产出稳步增加。

医院是教育部国家生命科学与人才培养基地-首都医科大学神经病学系、普通外科学系、皮肤与性病学系、老年医学系和首都医科大学神经外科学院二系的系主任单位，拥有博士点20个，硕士点16个。
