庐山云雾茶系我国十大名茶之一，始产于汉代，已有一千多年的栽种历史。据《庐山志》记载："东汉时，……僧侣云集。攀危岩，冒飞泉。更采野茶以充饥渴。各寺于白云深处劈岩削谷，栽种茶树，焙制茶叶，名云雾茶。"唐朝大诗人白居易曾在庐山香炉峰建草堂居住，亲自开辟茶园种茶，并留有茶诗数首。北宋时，庐山云雾茶曾列为"贡茶"。清代的李绂著有《六过庐记》，载有："山中皆种茶，循茶径而直下清溪。"可见当时庐山茶业之兴盛。1951年，庐山云雾茶进入国际市场试销后，深受欢迎。1971年，庐山云雾茶被列入中国绿茶类的特种名茶，1982年在江西茶叶评比中，名列江西八大名茶之冠。同年，全国名茶评比又被定为中国名茶。

九江市庐山茶叶科学研究所位于国家著名的旅游风景区庐山通远。它是一个集科研、生产、加工、销售于一体的名茶专业机构。拥有高山茶园1000亩，茶叶技术人员30多人。近几年来，随着茶叶生产以“安全，绿色，无公害”为主流方向，我所立足自身的生态环境和技术优势，启动和实施了有机茶产品开发项目。该项目被列为省农业优势产业及重点品牌扶持项目。通过中农质量中心有机茶认证，是我省主要的有机茶生产基地之一。
