上海美术电影制片厂是中国规模较大的美术电影制片基地，成立于1957年4月。这里汇集了蜚声动画影坛的编剧、导演、美术设计师、摄影师、作曲家和技术专家，具有较强的影视动画片创作和衍生产品研发实力。是融美术片、儿童片的制作、发行；图书杂志、音像制品等衍生产品的行销；版权经营与开发为一体的综合性影视文化机构。

多年来，《大闹天宫》、《牧笛》、《三个和尚》、《宝莲灯》、《马兰花》、《勇士》、《大耳朵图图》、《西岳奇童》等作品享誉国内外。在发展中国民族动画片的同时，还与法国、德国、美国、日本、加拿大、澳大利亚等国合作拍摄了《狐狸列那》、《诺亚方舟》、《不射之射》、《环游地球八十天》、《番茄酱》、《鸭子侦探》、《天才发明家》、《甜与酸》等影视片。

美影厂制作种类众多的动画片，包括：水墨动画、剪纸动画及木偶片，美影同样建立动画电影及动画系列片销售发行网络渠道。动画片行销遍及欧洲、亚洲及北美洲地区，作品亦在中国境内30多家电视台进行广泛的播放。

近几年来，美影厂坚持原创动画，开展积极的品牌战略，通过动画资源的深度开发、品牌输出、加强对外合作等重要举措，实现社会、经济效益的双赢，在国内外的动画领域传播、弘扬中国传统文化。2006年出品影院木偶片《西岳奇童》，票房突破300万，并受到市委宣传部的高度赞誉。2007年美影厂又创佳作，出品了大型民族史诗影院动画片《勇士》。2009年创作的动画影院片《马兰花》；在建党90周年来临之际，推出影片《西柏坡》。2011年，推出了影院动画大片《大闹天宫3D》《少年岳飞传奇》，不久还将创作新版《孙悟空》《黑猫警长》等影院动画作品。
