跃进汽车的历史可追溯到1947年，1958年3月10日成功地制造出我国较早的一辆轻型载货汽车，国家命名为跃进牌汽车，同时批准成立南京汽车制造厂。1995年6月21日国家经贸委同意更名为跃进汽车集团公司。2002年1月1日，由跃进汽车集团公司与中国信达资产管理公司、中国华融资产管理公司出资组建的南京汽车集团有限公司成立，标志着跃进汽车集团公司通过债转股方式从国有独资公司转变为由多个投资主体组成的有限责任公司。同年跃进汽车集团公司移交江苏省管理。

2003年8月28日，由跃进汽车集团公司、中国信达资产管理公司、中国华融资产管理公司、江苏省国信资产管理集团有限公司、江苏交通产业集团有限公司等5家公司共同出资重组的南京汽车集团有限公司正式揭牌。

目前跃进品牌产品从单一的跃进老产品扩展成新老跃进并举，专用底盘、高速环保车、改装车、特种车、皮卡车、多功能旅行车齐进。

南京依维柯公司生产的轻型客车、厢式货车、卡车以及越野车等数十种基本车型和公安、救护、运钞等各种特种车涉足各行各业，不仅被驻港、驻澳部队和联合国维和部队采用，更被联合国第十一次蒙特利尔缔约大会作为指定用车。依维柯军用越野车经过严格的高温、严寒、空投等试验，已成为边防巡逻车的定点生产厂。该公司以超常规的思路、超常规的举措加大技改力度，实现乘用车、专用车、商用车“三箭齐发”。2004年3月28日，为拓展市场，南京依维柯公司隆重推出南京依维柯——都灵“V”。

2005年7月23日，南汽成功收购英国MG罗孚汽车公司及其动力系统公司，开创了中国汽车企业收购外国汽车公司的先河。2006年3月27日，南汽名爵（MG）汽车项目在南京高新技术产业开发区奠基，2007年3月27日MG名爵汽车顺利下线，南汽集团走出中国汽车工业发展的第三条道路——国内汽车企业以资本运作等形式拥有或主导国际汽车品牌及核心技术而使得跨跃式发展成为可能的一种模式。

2006年9月14日，南汽与依维柯公司签署进一步深化合作的协议，将南汽跃进与南京依维柯的业务整合，形成完整的轻型、中型和重型商用车产品系列，建设国内商用车生产基地。整合后的南京依维柯从2007年1月1日起正式运营。
