广东省心血管病研究所从1982年开始，连续5届担任世界卫生组织心血管疾病研究合作中心，该研究所在心内科、心外科、心儿科基础研究和临床研究方面发展，医疗技术居前列，不少研究领域已与发达国家接轨，是全国三大心血管疾病治疗中心之一，拥有四个广东省重点实验室：广东省冠心病防治研究重点实验室，广东省华南结构性心脏病重点实验室，广东省肺癌转化医学重点实验室，广东省临床药理学重点实验室。医院其它专业也各具特点，并能发展，尤其是呼吸疾病介入治疗、白血病防治、神经内科、神经外科、骨科、骨质疏松防治、精神医学、心身医学、康复医学、烧伤科、眼科、消化内科、普通外科、影像医学科和临床药理学研究等专业保持和发展了其优势。

广东省人民医院是“广东省高等医学院校教学医院”。承担了南方医科大学临床医学专业本科理论大课教学和南方医科大学、中山大学、汕头大学、广州医科大学、广东医科大学、广东药科大学、广州中医药大学等多所院校共600多名学生的实习带教任务，每年接收进修生约1200多人次，各专业的教学质量得到学生、校方和进修生的充分肯定。
