加强与国外顶级企业的合资合作，通过与“巨人一起登山”，提升了多角化产业发展水平。与英国维苏威公司合资建设耐火材料项目，与科德控股（欧洲）有限公司合资建设冷轧工作辊镀铬项目，与比利时贝卡尔特公司合资建设重庆钢帘线项目，与德国贝克吉利尼公司合资建设水处理项目，与韩国斯多博格三一公司合资建设保护渣项目，与美国铁姆肯公司合资建设的轴承修复项目。这一系列合资合作项目的成功实施，使鞍钢集团公司多角化产业的核心竞争力得到显著提升，成为新的效益增长点。

始终以发展绿色、低碳经济为己任，不断拓展钢铁行业“清洁、绿色、低碳”的发展内涵。“十一五”期间节能319万吨标准煤，超额完成“十一五”节能目标，在2010年5月召开的国务院节能减排工作会议上，鞍钢作为唯一一家企业介绍了经验。2008年在渤海湾建成了引领世界钢铁工业发展的绿色样板工厂——鲅鱼圈钢铁新区，实现了从传统制造向低碳绿色制造的转变。依靠自主创新，鲅鱼圈钢铁新区实现了重点领域和关键节能环保技术的突破，建立起铁素资源和能源循环、水资源循环、固体次生物资源化的综合利用体系。开创了中国钢铁企业同时开发利用风能、太阳能、海水淡化技术的先河，成为钢铁企业利用清洁能源的“示范基地”。
