宏济堂始于1907年,由北京同仁堂资东、电视剧《大宅门》主人公原型乐镜宇先生创办。乐镜宇系同仁堂十二代传人,1902年捐官山东候补道由京来济候补,期间,承家传岐黄之术,研习阿胶制作技艺;1906年,受山东巡抚杨士骧委托,创办山东官药局出任总办;1907年,斥巨资还官银获山东官药局承授权,立堂旨“宏仁广布、济世养生”,故更名宏济堂。宏济堂得同仁堂之滋、遵同仁堂故事,穷究方术,精研修合,以药材道地、秘方效验、名医坐堂、工良艺湛、药真价实、童叟无欺独创风格。
1909年,宏济堂于济南府西门外趵突泉畔——中国阿胶圣地东流水街建阿胶厂,同年所产东流水阿胶进奉皇室被御赐为“九天贡胶”;1915年,宏济堂东流水阿胶获巴拿马万国商品博览会金奖;20世纪10-30年代,宏济堂北京建参茸阿胶庄,济南建人文神韵之东、中、西号三店堂,开国药同城商铺连营之滥觞。
宏济堂历经百年,遵堂旨、承祖训,施粥赈灾,捐资助学,抵制日货,正义爱国。倾其力、解囊创办山东国医学堂;尽其能、成就培养一代山东名医;冲围困、贸易于抗日根据地;其“声誉、药品,推及黄河、长江两域,无间妇孺,咸使间知……”与北京同仁堂、杭州胡庆余堂并誉为中华三大名堂。
解放后,已是乐家总掌门的乐镜宇年逾八旬,商号铺务逐交子孙辈接管,作为中国民族工商业的优秀代表,受党和政府之邀,由继任者其侄乐松生先生代其二次荣获毛主席、周总理之接见。宏济堂则公私合营,直到发展为现在的山东宏济堂医药集团。
