珍世昌始创于清咸丰五年（1855年），苏州商人朱伯良在苏州阊门附近（山塘通贵桥边）开了这家珍珠店铺，取名珍世昌，世代繁荣昌盛之意。
清咸丰十年（1860年）太平天国攻入苏州，掠夺大量珠宝，珍世昌损失惨重，被迫关店，举家搬迁到太湖附近，潜心培育养殖人工珍珠。因其培育的珍珠品质上乘，圆润无暇受到地方官员的追捧，作为贡品进贡朝廷，每年按例进贡，成为御用贡珠。
后慈禧执政，进贡珍珠需求逐年攀升，珍珠粉可以内服外敷，珍珠可以用在衣冠帽履，在慈禧太后的影响下，珍珠成了宫中人人必备佳品，有相当一部分太湖珍珠流入宫中，相传慈禧太后曾赞誉：“东珠、南珠不如太湖珍珠”。
在清朝末年很长一段时间里太湖珍珠大多是由珍世昌所经营，后因连年战乱朱氏子孙部分搬迁到其他地区，但朱氏子孙一直心系祖业。
改革开放后，随着国内经济的蓬勃发展，珍珠行业在近几年又受到了人们的追捧，部分朱氏子孙又重新回到苏州再续传奇。
2015年珍妍生物在于朱氏后人经过长达3年的接触后决定，联合珍世昌后人所提供的珍世昌的历史和资料，巨资重新打造珍世昌品牌，让百年品牌重获新生。珍世昌推出的产品“珍世昌天然珍珠粉”精选苏州太湖珍珠为原料，采用物理超微气流粉体技术精制而成。
