学院办学历史悠久，学术积淀深厚。其前身可追溯到1893年清末湖广总督张之洞创办自强学堂时设立的商务门，其实体根基源自1916年设立的国立武昌商业专门学校。1928年国立武汉大学设经济学系。1981年经济学系与经济管理系分设，1999年经济学院、管理学院和旅游学院合并为商学院。2001年原武汉大学商学院、原武汉水利电力大学经济管理学院与原武汉测绘科技大学经济管理、市场营销教研室合并组建新武汉大学商学院，2005年更名为经济与管理学院。
