步瀛斋始创于清代咸丰八年（1858年），由在朝李姓命官所建。“步瀛”二字优雅而有气势：举足而入瀛州（仙境），一步而遍瀛海（世界）。曾见于学者雅士之名，如清朝书画家方步瀛、杰出的中国古典文学专家方步瀛教授。步瀛斋的命名既表达了东家“生意兴隆通四海”的愿望；也表达了对顾客的祝福：穿上在这里买的鞋，足下生辉，平步青云，步入仙境。

历史追溯

步瀛斋前店后厂，“敬业乐群，诚信待客”，以制作和销售步鞋为主，尤以千层底布鞋享誉京都内外。不仅用料上乘，且做工精细，每平方寸80—100针的鞋底用人工一针一针地纳成，针眼横平竖直，以确保“千层底”不走样、不变形。最初的服务对象为上流社会的达官贵人，随着社会的变迁，三教九流不同阶层的人群也渐渐与步瀛斋结下了“鞋缘”。

步瀛斋的自产布鞋保持了传统手工工艺，男鞋潇洒，女鞋俏丽，布底轻便舒适、皮底坚固气派，皮面胶底既有皮鞋之美又有布鞋之便；而冬令棉鞋素有艺术品之美称。1993年步瀛斋品牌商标被国内贸易部评为中华老字号,1998年以来,又连续被北京市工商行政管理局评为北京市著名商标。2001年被北京市旅游局评为旅游定点商店，2006年被商务部再次评定为中华老字号。

步瀛斋品牌文化为满足现今社会多元化之需求，步瀛斋近年来又相继研制开发了男女休闲布鞋，各式男女皮鞋、布鞋、童鞋，品种达5000余种，备受欢迎。
