新民晚报是文汇新民联合报业集团旗下的主流媒体，创刊于1929年9月9日，是中国创刊时间最早、出版时间最长的晚报。目前，新民晚报在北京、深圳和美国设有记者站。1994年，新民晚报在美国设立了新民国际有限公司，1996年成立新民晚报美国记者站，迄今在海外创办了《美国版》《澳洲版》《英国版》《西班牙版》《日本版》等28个新民晚报海外版，让越来越多的海外华人读者能看到当天的报纸。2006年9月新民晚报创办了新民网；2007年3月上海第一张获得国家批准的社区报——新民晚报社区版创刊；2007年10月上海首份全方位女性刊物《新民BELLA》上市。新民报系已初具规模。

作为一张发行量逾百万份的大报，新民晚报的读者品质、品牌价值都很高。2008年6月2日，世界品牌实验室在北京发布了2008（第五届）《中国500最具价值品牌》，本报连续五年入选。2008年在瑞典哥德堡召开的第61届世界报业大会上，公布2008年世界日报发行量前100名排行榜，新民晚报名列第48位。2009年6月，世界品牌实验室发布了中国500最具价值品牌中，新民晚报连续第六年入选，并在中国年度最具价值品牌中跻身第129位，是本年度上海地区唯一进入这一榜单的媒体。

2008年在瑞典哥德堡举行的第61届世界报业大会上，公布2008年世界日报发行量前100名排行榜，新民晚报名列第48位，继续成为上海地区唯一上榜的报纸。国家新闻出版署下属权威机构调查表明，新民晚报在上海地区发行量百万以上，超过排名第2的报纸一倍以上。中国新闻研究中心（www.cddc.net）对全国各地综合类报刊的调查显示，新民晚报为上海市影响力最大、公信力最强的报刊。

2007年4月，新生代市场监测机构发布CMMS2007中国市场与媒体研究（春季）数据，新民晚报日阅读人数达450万人，平均每4个上海人就有1位阅读新民晚报，在上海所有的报纸中具有最大的阅读人数，比第二位的报纸日阅读人数多60%。新民晚报的读者品质、忠诚度，与上海区域文化的粘着力，使她真正成为上海的城市符号。
