恩施玉露产于湖北恩施市南部的芭蕉乡及东郊五峰山。湖北产茶历史悠久，早在唐代就已很著名，现仍是我国的重要产茶省份。恩施玉露是我国保留下来的为数不多的一种蒸青绿茶，其制作工艺及所用工具相当古老，与陆羽《茶经》所载十分相似。

相传于清康熙年间，恩施芭蕉黄连溪有一蓝姓茶商，垒灶研制，所制茶叶外形紧圆、坚挺，色绿、毫白如玉，故称恩施玉绿。到晚清至民国初期，为茶叶发展兴盛时期。1936年湖北民生公司管茶官杨润之，改锅炒杀青，其茶不但茶之汤色、叶底绿亮、鲜香味爽，而且使外形色泽油润翠绿，毫白如玉，故改名为恩施玉露。

恩施玉露是我国罕有的传统蒸青绿茶，以别具一格的品质特色，赢得世人赞赏，屡次被评为名茶。该茶选用叶色浓绿的一芽一叶或一芽二叶鲜叶经蒸汽杀青制作而成。恩施玉露对采制的要求很严格，芽叶须细嫩、匀齐，成茶条索紧细，色泽鲜绿，匀齐挺直，状如松针；茶汤清澈明亮，香气清鲜，滋味甘醇，叶底色绿如玉。“三绿”（茶绿、汤绿、叶底绿）为其显著特点。
